Synopsis:

It's well known that many incunabula and post-incunabula books do not have a proper title page. The common solution used by some printers is to show in the centre on the first page, a more or less abbreviated title, leaving blank that side of the page, starting on that side, possibly in a table (as happens in this case).

The example cited shows the title like this: Cura de la piedra y dolor de la yjada y colica rrenal (The cure for the painful stones and renal colic). But as it happens in some of the examples, there are thought to be two copies within the same edition. On the second version, on the first sheet appears a xylographic engraving representing St. Cosme and St. Damian.

One has to reach the heading of the prologue where the author introduces himself: the book is "made and dedicated to God: and to the Virgin and the mother, his and our Lady by Dr. Julián Gutiérrez de Toledo, physicist of the very excellent King Don Fernando and Queen Ysabel, reigning Spain". At the end of that same prologue, there is a summary by the author that is worth looking at. "In the first part I will show the causes that create stones, following the doctrine laid down by philosophers and doctors. In the second part I will explain signs and diagnosis. And in the third part, I will explain how to prevent the illness. In the fourth part I will show you the cure. In the fifth part, I will tackle any doubts".
