The Castilian bachelor Alfonso de la Torre composed this essay towards 1440, requested by the prior of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Juan de Beamonte. The essay consists of two parts: in the first liberal arts are discussed, Metaphysics and Nature; and in the second moral philosophy and virtues and passions. Twenty two illustrations accompany each of the subjects addressed. The author writes with learning and ingenuity, in a prose typical of its era. It is a text which had a clear editorial success, and was printed several times. -Our edition: Valencia, 1996.
